Mahdi Ali, born in a Kenyan refugee camp, was trafficked to the U.S. at age nine and abandoned upon arriving in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

After fleeing group homes and foster homes, he attended Sanford Middle School where he first learned English, and later Roosevelt and South High.

In 2010, at age 15, he was arrested for a triple homicide at Seward Halal Market, and ultimately convicted in 2011 based on flawed evidence, and false testimony, including a recanted testimony from the convicted accomplice to the crimes who said Mahdi was really innocent. Mahdi is currently serving life without parole.
